grouping era northern steam.<\/p>\n<p>I had got to here when the plan started to go wrong&#8230;.. \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/-k9W-N29QgM\" target=\"_self\">Nellie&#8217;s first run<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A Change of Heart<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td>\n<div>\n<div>Once I had her running I started to get attached and to look at whether she remotely resembled any of the LNER locos.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I took the plunge and replaced the supplied white metal clack valves with some brass ones from Jim McGeown. \u00a0A rummage in the scrap box yielded a westinghouse pump.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So she looked like this&#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Buffer details<\/strong><\/span><strong><\/strong>The buffers supplied with the kit are solid white metal ones.\u00a0For the more discerning Jim recommends the sprung pre group ones from Slaters.<\/p>\n<p>A trip to my local model shop\u00a0 &#8211; Wakefield Models and Crafts set me up with a set and a crew\u00a0(but more on them when I get to them).<\/p>\n<p>The Slaters buffers are rather nice brass turnings with steel heads.\u00a0In order to improve them I drilled out for bolt heads and consulted my store of Scale hardware.\u00a0Sadly I had nothing that suited to hand so I filed the heads of some brass pins square and soldered them in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"color: #000000;\" src=\"http:\/\/79.170.40.240\/railway-models-and-art.co.uk\/images\/Nellie%20006.JPG\" alt=\"\" align=\"\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/79.170.40.240\/railway-models-and-art.co.uk\/images\/Nellie%20007.JPG\" alt=\"\" align=\"\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lubricators<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td>In early August 2012 the latest Gauge O Guild Gazette dropped through my letterbox.One of the articles in it was about making scratch built Silvertown Lubricators from brass.<\/p>\n<p>While Silvertown were not suitable for Nellie, a\u00a0look though the RCTS green bible revealed that some LNER small tanks Y8&#8217;s\u00a0had lubricators fitted to the tank fronts.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with a length of brass bar, I measured 10mm along and marked it (for two\u00a0lubricators 5mm each). I then filed a slop on the top and drilled 4 holes in the bottoms\u00a0for the pipes. I got a piece of scrap fret and marked it to length.<\/p>\n<p>I then filed each side of the front face to make a lifting handle.
