How to – Drawing an NSR Lamp post in Fusion 360

Over on one of the other forums, I was asked for help in the form of how to go about drawing up an NSR lamp post

On the basis of the drawing I had a few ideas of who I might go about it and once I had it cracked I was asked for an explanation of how I had gone about it. I thought I would share it wider as it might help someone at some point. You will have to excuse some of the wording that relates to answering the initial question. I haven’t the time at the moment to go through and re write it.

This was the drawing attached to the request for help.

First I downloaded Andy’s drawing and imported it into Fusion on the front plane. Then as I said previously, but repeated here for completeness. Because the drawing had no dimensions, I best guessed that the main part of the post would be around 10 feet tall. I was way out as it’s only around 6ft when taken right to the ground.

However using the 10ft as the basis, I created my self a User parameter of 1ft/7mm which allowed me to quickly scale the drawing to 7mm to the foot.

Next I did pretty much as Mossy had done in his test example and drew a profile of the lamp base and revolved it.

Then I worked out the middle of the column height wise and created an offset plane.

Then I created a sketch on that offset plane and drew the shape for my cut out

I nloy drew one of the shapes then used the ‘create circular pattern’ tool to create the other five. As it tuned out initially I had the outer circle slightly under the column sized so when I extruded as a cut it was actually inside the body.
I then extruded using the symmetrical function and cut command so I was going both up and down to get the cut outs in place all around the column.

Guildex Part Two – My Loco Section Model Entry

Around 4 weeks or so ago I decided to enter my tram engine into the modelling competition in the Loco section.   Having done so, a week before the show I decided to weather it.

Although it didn’t do anything in the competition I am really pleased with how it came out and I don’t regret the decision to weather it.

Guildex 2018 The O Gauge Premier Show

Last weekend I was demonstrating my Silhouette Cutter at Guildex for a couple of days. I also, as has been my habit for the last few years, entered a few items in the Modelling Competition. I had three entries in the rolling stock section and to my surprise and delight two of them took 2nd and 3rd places – First was quite rightly won by a full breakdown train.

Moving Coal entry in the Guildex 2018 Rolling Stock section of the Modelling Competition;

Rather foolishly on the day I clipped the opening end door shut on the NBR wagon so it’s best feature was lost on the judges. As it turned out if it had done something it would have only displaced one of the other entries so nothing lost.

The Highly Commended entry is now in the small adds because being in BR livery it doesn’t really fit with my grouping era models.

Guildex 2017 Modelling competition entries

For the last few years I have entered some of my models in the annual modelling competition at Guildex and this year I did the same.
Starting off with the items that didn’t get placed.
Scratch built Dowlow Lime Wagon – this was built before I got the Silhouette cutter but I weathered it a couple of weeks ago.

Next I entered my trio of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Tar Distillers wagons. The two red ones being from Slaters kits and the black one built from parts cut on the Silhouette cutter. Again finally weathered in the last couple of weeks

Gauge O Guild Modelling Competition – Runner Up and Commended Awards

I was really thrilled that I was awarded Runner up and Commended for some of my entries into the Rolling Stock category of the modelling competition at Guildex on Saturday. It was especially satisfying that my efforts were placed from such high quality entries in the Guilds 60th Anniversary year.

It’s also a first for me, not being interested in sport or other competitive pursuits, the only thing that I have ever won before this, was a tin of biscuits in a raffle:))

The commended award was for my Condemned ex NBR Jubilee van.

Besides the Condemned Van, I also submitted an LNER (ex NBR) goods train broken up into five seperate entries (comprising: models built from Connoisseur kit’s, models built from Parkside Dundas kits, models built from Dragon Models kit’s and scratch built models).

The runner up award was for the scratch built section of the train. Most of which are pictured below (there is one of the beaded jubilee vans missing because I couldn’t fit it onto my diorama).

Apparently, it was this particular model from the selection that carried the day, this was built the old fashioned way before I got the Silhouette cutter.

I was also advised that this one made the initial short list too but ultimately didn’t go any further.
